The total number of catering establishments in Russia in November of this year decreased by 3.1% year-on-year, or by 3,700, to 115,000, reports “Kommersant”, citing data from “Yandex Maps”. Most often, sushi bars were closing – their number decreased by 7.5% (reduction to 7,000 outlets). The number of pizzerias decreased by 6.4% (to 6,300), cafes – by 2.8% (to 76,300), restaurants – by 1.7% (to 24,800), and food malls and gastro markets – by 1.4% (to 217). The only ones to increase in number were tea houses, the number of which reached 340 (an increase of 2.3 times).
The decline in the number of catering establishments, according to statistics, is being recorded for the first time since 2022. Then their number increased compared to 2021 by about 2.9%. In the following year, the number of cafes, restaurants, and other establishments increased by 6.7%, and in the past (https://marketing.rbc.ru/articles/15629/) year – by 2%.
According to the “Sberindex” data, the growth rate of Russians’ spending on cafes and restaurants this year has slowed down almost fourfold: at the end of last year it was 23% in annual terms, and in December 2025 – only 6.2%. According to Focus Technologies, the volume of orders in classic cafes and restaurants in Moscow in January-October fell by 5% year-on-year.
The trend of reducing the number of catering outlets will continue against the backdrop of the ongoing increase in costs, predicts food and beverage broker Ruslan Husseynov. Sanctions, rising inflation, and an overheated labor market continue to “take a toll” on the economy, he notes (The Moscow Times).
