The Russian authorities will not block the work of VPN services in 2026, as this technology cannot be fully controlled. Such a statement was made by the head of the State Duma Committee on Information Policy, Information Technologies and Communications, Sergei Boyarsky, in a conversation with RBK.
“This is a technology that can’t be reined in. We understand this very well, so VPN will not be restricted in any way,” said the parliamentarian, urging Russians to “be more careful and cautious” with VPN services, as they, in his words, can be “downright dangerous”.
At the same time, the deputy noted that the authorities are interested in ensuring that Russians do not get used to constantly using VPN. He recalled that the state spends significant resources on blocking prohibited content not “just for the sake of it,” but as part of the fight against “extremism”. In Boyarsky’s opinion, constant use of VPN can lead “to such corners of the internet that it’s better not to stumble into, especially for teenagers” (The Moscow Times).
