Belarus and Georgia are opening a facility to assemble lifts in Tbilisi, Ambassador of Belarus to Georgia Mikhail Myatlikov said.
“The project to set up the assembly production of lifts in Georgia is getting off the ground. About 25,000 lifts need to be modernized in Georgia. Of them at least 50% are of Belarusian make (by Mogilevliftmash). They were supplied back in the Soviet period. First of all, this project targets the Georgian market, such cities as Tbilisi, Batumi, Kutaisi,” the ambassador noted.
Speaking about the prospects of joint ventures in Georgia, he noted that the capacity of the Georgian market was not big. However, Georgia has free trade agreements with countries in different regions. It is therefore possible to consider organizing joint ventures with an eye on markets of the third countries.
“When setting up assembly facilities we need to understand that a certain level of localization is required. It is not always possible to achieve this level. But if it is achieved, then the product acquires the status of a Georgian-made product and can be delivered to the markets of third countries in the framework of free trade agreements. In the production of lifts we can achieve this level of localization. Automated equipment and metal are available. Elevator cabins are delivered. We can set up a joint venture with the necessary level of localization,” Ambassador Mikhail Myatlikov said.
According to the diplomat, everything in Georgia goes through tenders, no matter whether it is an imported or domestic product. There are no preferences to domestic producers. Companies that set up production facilities under the Produce in Georgia program get subsidies from the state. (BelTA/Business World Magazine)
