Turkmenistan’s President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov held a working meeting on preparations for the first Global Sustainable Transport Conference to be held on November 26-27 in Ashgabat, the Turkmen government said in a message.
He said that in modern conditions the cooperation in the transportation and communications sector gained special importance as an essential factor of global sustainable development.
This area was one of the key segments of the global economy, directly affecting the efficiency and balance of world economic relations, according to him.
The favorable geographical position of Turkmenistan stipulates its strengthening status as an important transit and transportation hub of regional and continental importance.
Several international conventions and agreements are planned to be signed during the Global Sustainable Transport Conference.
The upcoming Global Sustainable Transport Conference will be held in accordance with the UN resolution “Toward comprehensive cooperation among all modes of transport for promoting sustainable multimodal transit corridors” adopted at the 70th session of the UN General Assembly in December 2015.
The agenda will include a wide range of topical issues. Among those issues are sustainable transport and environmental change, energy and transport, urban transport system, the investment in the transport sector and its financing, international cooperation in the transport sector and its legal basis, the development of multimodal transport corridors and their infrastructure, traffic safety, the message said.
Ashgabat is involved in several large-scale projects. Kazakhstan-Turkmenistan-Iran and Turkmenistan-Afghanistan-Tajikistan railways, road and rail bridges over the Amu Darya river, airports, motorways, the Turkmenbashi international seaport are designed to be important components of the international network of transport communications in the region.
