The Uzbek government has plans to implement a $138-million project aimed at improving the water supply system in the country’s extreme southeast Surkhandarya region.
According to project details, presented on August 11 to President Shavkat Mirziyoyev, funds were expected to be raised from international financial institutions. They would be used to build a 400 km-long backbone network. The project is to be commissioned in 2024.
Some 46% of the population of the Surkhandarya region have no access to a centralized drinking water supply. Nearly 216 hydraulic structures and more than 3,000 km of water supply networks in the region are in need of repair.
Mirziyoyev also ordered to build structures for pressure damping and water purification and organize the distribution of water from Tupalang reservoir. The new facility would be able to distribute 200,000 cubic meters of water per day. (Uzreport/Business World Magazine)
