On June 30 a grant agreement for “the Project for Improvement of Substations in Dushanbe” was signed between Tajikistan and the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) in the amount of 2,190 million Japanese Yen (about $20 million), JICA Tajikistan Office reported.
The document was reportedly inked by the Minister of Finance of Tajikistan Abdusalom Qurboniyon and JICA Chief Representative in Tajikistan Hideki Tanabe.
The project will be implemented by OJSHC Barqi Tojik (Tajikistan’s national integrated power company) under supervision of the Ministry of Energy and Water Resources of Tajikistan.
The objective of the project is to improve sustainability of stable and efficient power supply in Dushanbe city through rehabilitation of Promishlennaya substation and construction of new Radiostantsiya substation, thereby contributing to social and economic development of the Republic of Tajikistan.
It is worth noting that most of the substations located in Dushanbe city were built during the Soviet Union Era and the lifetime of the installed equipment has already expired. Implementation of this project will provide reliable supply of electricity to the widespread areas of Dushanbe city and will increase the industrial and commercial potential of this area.
The project is the very first project supported by JICA in energy sector. JICA will continue to support to enhance Tajikistan’s energy sector.
JICA began its technical cooperation with Tajikistan in 1993 by inviting Tajik officials to gain knowledge and experience on governance and macroeconomics development. (News.tj/Business World Magazine)
