Dnipro is upgrading its urban electric transport with the support of the European Investment Bank (EIB). As part of the “Urban Public Transport of Ukraine II” program, which is implemented by the Ministry of Reconstruction, Infrastructure and Transport together with the Ministry of Finance, the city is purchasing 5 new trams and 15 trolleybuses.
The purchase is being carried out through the signing of two contracts. Within the framework of another, third, the city plans to purchase 3 more new trams and equipment for technical maintenance.
The total cost of the project is over 21 million euros.
The first 5 trams have already been manufactured by the Ukrainian enterprise “Tatra-Yug” in Dnipro. These are modern low-floor cars. The first tram arrived in the city in February and was already operating on the route.
“The modernization of urban transport directly affects the quality of people’s daily lives. In Dnipro, thanks to cooperation with the European Investment Bank, the city is receiving modern low-floor trams and trolleybuses, which are to operate on key routes, in particular along the first barrier-free route. It is also fundamentally important for us that this project supports a Ukrainian manufacturer: new trams are manufactured in Dnipro with a localization level of up to 70%, and more than 100 Ukrainian enterprises are involved in production cooperation. It is such investments that simultaneously help communities modernize transport, create an accessible urban environment, and support the Ukrainian economy,” said Mykola Kalashnyk, Minister of Reconstruction, Infrastructure and Transport of Ukraine.
The next stage will be the supply of 15 new low-floor Dnipro T-203 trolleybuses with autonomous operation. The trolleybuses will be delivered in 2026-2027. 8 units are planned to be received in 2026.
After the contract is completed, Dnipro will have 111 modern low-floor trolleybuses, which is 65% of the city’s total trolleybus fleet.
The new trams and trolleybuses will operate on city routes, including along the first barrier-free route as part of the flagship project “Traffic Without Barriers,” initiated by the First Lady of Ukraine, Olena Zelenska.
Transport modernization is especially important for Dnipro, as the average age of trams in the city is over 40 years. Out of 254 tram cars, only 5 are low-floor, and the average age of trolleybuses is 17 years.
The project helps to simultaneously modernize city transport, make it more accessible to passengers, and support Ukrainian production.
The project is being implemented in cooperation with the European Investment Bank, the Ministry of Reconstruction, Infrastructure and Transport of Ukraine, the Ministry of Finance of Ukraine, the Dnipro City Council, and the Dnipro Electric Transport Enterprise. (Infrastructure Ministry)
