Kyrgyzstan’s President Almazbek Atambayev signed the law on scheduling the referendum on making amendments to the country’s constitution for December 11, said the message posted on the president’s website.
During its final reading on November 2, Kyrgyzstan’s parliament approved of the draft law on scheduling the referendum on amending the constitution for December 11.
Earlier, led by Kyrgyzstan’s president, a number of factions represented in the parliament, put forward an initiative to amend the country’s current constitution, which was adopted in the referendum after the coup in 2010.
The initiators propose to strengthen the powers of the country’s prime minister and allow combining the position of the prime minister, or deputy prime minister with MP activities.
Ninety MPs voted for the proposed draft law.
Under the law, the Central Election Commission of Kyrgyzstan considers the referendum valid if over 30% of voters participate in it. (Trend/Business World Magazine)
