An “energy island” has been launched in Mykolaiv, enabling the city to supply 65% of its critical infrastructure with electricity during blackouts, the Head of the Mykolaiv Regional Military Administration Vitalii Kim has announced.
“The “energy island”, which provides electricity to social and critical infrastructure from alternative sources (cogeneration units, solar power plants), is now operational. This is the result of cooperation between authorities, businesses, and international partners. We have already tested this system twice – when, following shelling, there was a threat of heating being shut down across all of Mykolaiv,” Kim said.
According to him, the system currently makes it possible to cover 65% of the city’s critical infrastructure during blackouts. At the same time, the authorities aim to increase this figure to 91%, which is outlined in the community’s resilience plan.
He also noted that work was ongoing to restructure the system in order to channel more energy from alternative sources (solar and wind) from the region into the city, as there were still certain challenges in this area. (Ukrinform)
