The airlines “Rossiya” (part of the “Aeroflot” group) and Nordwind are suspending flights to Cuba due to difficulties with refueling aircraft caused by a fuel shortage on the island, Rostaviatsia reported. The decision will be in effect “until the situation changes”.
In “Aeroflot”, they clarified that the company will send six flights to Moscow to evacuate Russians from Cuba: one from Havana (February 16) and five from Varadero (February 12, 14, 17, 19, 21). Also, on February 15, a flight from Moscow to Havana will be organized for the return of foreign tourists. From February 24, flights to Cuba are being canceled. According to the Association of Tour Operators of Russia, there are currently at least 4,200 Russians on the island. The sale of tours has been suspended.
Since February 10, foreign aircraft are no longer refueling at international airports in Cuba. The authorities of the republic blame the USA for the fuel crisis. On January 29, Donald Trump called Cuba an “extraordinary threat” and threatened to impose tariffs on countries that attempt to deliver oil there (The Moscow Times).
