The governments of Moldova and Romania should construct as many bridges across the Prut River as possible, Infrastructure and Regional Development Minister Andrei Spinu has declared. The minister referred to the projects on interconnection between Moldova and the European Union, through Romania.
“We speak about a new bridge in Ungheni; we must modernize the bridge in Sculeni, the Leuseni bridge, the one in Giurgiulesti. This is our moral and geopolitical obligation – to build these interconnections as quickly as possible,” the official said.
Another priority is a connection between the two countries on highway. In Moldova, there are no projects of highway, which are to connect the Iasi city to Chisinau and then to Odesa, in Ukraine. Yet, no concrete steps have been made. On the other hand, Moldova is the only country non-EU member, which is included in a European project on interconnection, for which it receives financing of 2 billion euros.
“We have already applied along with Romania and we will have financing for the bridges across the Prut River; 50% of the costs will be borne from European money,” Spinu noted.
The minister also said he wanted to rehabilitate all national roads of Moldova within this project. Also, decision-makers take into account the rehabilitation of the railways and the switch from the Soviet gauge to the European one.
“The zero priority is to start now. If we are alone, we will not succeed,” Andrei Spinu said.
“We do not see another future of Moldova outside the European Union. And the interconnection of the infrastructure is probably the quickest step through which we can get, de facto, to be interconnected. Moldova’s interconnection with Romania is, in fact, the interconnection of Moldova with the European Union,” the Moldovan infrastructure minister said. (Moldpres/Business World Magazine)
