Amateur and professional athletes in Georgia’s western city of Kutaisi will now benefit from a brand-new Olympic Pool in the city, after the Asian Development Bank-supported construction was completed following two years of work.
The Ministry of Infrastructure on May 18 said the Pool was in the testing phase before opening to “children, adults, professional athletes and amateurs” to bring both active recreation and sports training to residents and visitors.
Built in recognition of Kutaisi’s heritage as the birthplace of some of the most recognised water polo and swimming sport names in Georgia over the decades, the 600-seat facility will be able to host local and international competitions.
Infrastructure Minister Irakli Karseladze said swimming and synchronised swimming competitions, as well as water polo events would be hosted at the pool, which had 50- and 25-metre-long lanes, a smaller pool for children, a fitness hall and other areas.
Its construction was launched in April 2021 and received a GEL 13.6 million ($5.34 million) financial support from the ADB. (Agenda/Business World Magazine)
