The connection between Moldova and Romania, respectively, the European Union, will be improved through the creation of better conditions of safety and mobility both for goods and passengers, the government’s communication and protocol department has reported.
At a meeting on April 4, the Cabinet, at the initiative by the Infrastructure and Regional Development Ministry, approved the launch of negotiations on the bilateral Moldovan-Romanian agreements, which provided for the reconstruction and rehabilitation of cross-border bridges across the Prut River. Their reconstruction, exploitation and maintenance will ease the traffic between the two states, facilitate the trade on the domestic market and the international one, as well as anchor the status of Moldova as bridge between the European Union countries and the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) member countries.
The negotiations concern agreements on the road bridge across the Prut River, between the settlements Leuseni (MD) – Albita (RO), Cahul (MD) – Oancea (RO) and Sculeni (MD) and Sculeni (RO).
The works on modernization and maintenance of those three cross-border bridges will be financed by the government of Romania. They are to be carried out till late 2027 and are part of the European Moldova 2030 national development strategy.
In summer of 2022, specialists finished the works on the consolidation of the border road bridge Giurgiulesti (MD) – Galati (RO), with an investment of about 8 million Romanian lei, fully provided by Romania’s government.
In April, a meeting of the Moldovan-Romanian joint commission is scheduled to be held; the participants of the event will discuss the construction of the border road bridge across the Prut River between the settlements Ungheni (MD) and Ungheni (RO). This bridge is part of the UNION Highway – highway Targu Mures – Iasi – Ungheni – state border (RO) and the R1 national road Chisinau – Ungheni – border with Romania (MD).
