A historical bridge in the central Georgian city of Gori has reopened after an European Union-backed rehabilitation, with the 1908 structure now open for pedestrian access.
The completion of the restoration of the structure – the first iron-concrete bridge built in Georgia – was revealed by Gori City Hall on January 5.
In its announcement, the city authorities noted the history of the bridge – a cultural heritage monument – and its historical status, stemming from its construction using what was considered innovative material mix in the early 20th century.
Known among locals as the Old Bridge, it was built over River Mtkvari to connect the Old Town of the city with its railway station settlement.
It is among infrastructure objects rehabilitated under the EU grant on Empowering Local Economic Opportunities for Sustainable Growth in the central Georgian municipality. (Agenda/Business World Magazine)
