Lithuania could synchronise its electricity grid with continental Europe faster than planned, provided it postpones other infrastructure projects, according to the Energy Minister Dainius Kreivys.
“I tried to make our position clear that we need faster synchronisation,” he told reporters after an extraordinary meeting of the EU Transport, Telecommunications and Energy Council in Brussels on May 2.
“From the whole catalogue of measures that we have to implement, we propose to select the most critical and most significant ones that would ensure the stability of our grid and to implement the others after synchronisation,” he said. “This would allow us to synchronize with continental Europe much earlier.”
The Baltic countries currently plan to disconnect from the post-Soviet BRELL ring and synchronize their electricity grids with the continental European system until the end of 2025.
Kreivys said earlier that consultations were underway with Europe on ways to bring forward the date of synchronisation. (LRT/Business World Magazine)
