U.S. congressmen have voiced support for Latvia’s security and an interest for developing closer cooperation with the country’s ports, as reported by Latvian Foreign Affairs Ministry.
On April 9, Latvian Foreign Affairs Minister Edgars Rinkevics met with a delegation of U.S. congressmen led by congressman Bull Shuster to discuss Trans-Atlantic relations, strategic cooperation between Latvia and USA in security and defense, as well as cooperation in transport and energy field.
Rinkevics emphasized the importance of the presence of American forces in the Baltic region. He also confirmed Latvia’s readiness to invest in defense and increase defense budget to 2% of GDP in 2018. The minister presented the advantages of Latvia’s transport infrastructure to U.S. congressmen. Officials also discussed cooperation opportunities in energy security, Foreign Affairs Ministry notes.
