First Deputy Prime Minister of Ukraine – Minister of Energy Denys Shmyhal, together with the President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen, the President of the European Council Antonio Costa, the President of Finland Oleksandr Stubbs and the heads of governments of Denmark, Estonia, Iceland, Latvia, Norway, Croatia, Sweden, ministers and other guests visited one of the thermal power plants in Kyiv.
Denys Shmyhal thanked international partners for their visit to Ukraine on the fourth anniversary of Russia’s full-scale invasion and demonstrated the consequences of Russian strikes on Ukrainian thermal power plants.
“At such facilities, war ceases to be a statistic or a picture on the screen. Here it is clear that Russia is fighting against light, against heat, against normality and the possibility of living,” the head of the Ministry of Energy noted.
According to him, the TPP, which the guests visited, provided heat to 500 thousand people in Kyiv. Over the past four years, Russia has launched 13 missile and drone attacks on it, 9 of which have occurred in the past six months. In January, the plant stopped generating electricity due to another strike. And in early February, 5 ballistic missiles hit there – and heat production stopped. More than 1,100 apartment buildings, 118 schools and kindergartens, and 18 hospitals were left without heating.
“This is both a crime scene and proof of Russian barbarity, but also a place of our resilience, partnership, and solidarity. After each strike, there is repair, often at the risk of repeated attacks. And I am grateful to every country that provides the necessary equipment for restoration,” Denys Shmyhal emphasized.
He noted that more than 40 countries and organizations were supporting the Ukrainian energy sector this winter. In 2025, about 600 million euros were mobilized through the Energy Support Fund. During the full-scale war, Ukraine received more than 2,000 humanitarian cargoes for the energy sector. (Energy Ministry)
