The average weighted price of a new passenger car in Russia over the four years of the war has risen by 46%, from 2.4 million to 3.5 million rubles, and taking into account the strong ruble, it exceeds $45 thousand, calculated the general director of the analytical agency “AUTOSTAT” Sergey Tselikov.
According to him, this is the fifth place among the largest car markets – after Canada ($62 thousand), the UK ($61 thousand), the USA (52 thousand) and Israel ($50 thousand). Cars in Russia are becoming one of the most expensive in the world, concludes Tselikov.
With an adjustment for consumer preferences, Russia is likely to be even higher in this ranking. In Canada and the USA, high average prices are due to the fact that more than half of the cars sold there are expensive large SUVs and pickups, and in the UK, the share of the premium segment is large, explains Tselikov. In Russia, the most popular brand remains Lada, which mainly produces small mass models of the B and C classes.
A similar situation is in Japan and India: there is a very large share of inexpensive compact cars. But these countries round out the list: with average prices 2 and 4 times lower than in Russia: $22.4 thousand and $11 thousand respectively.
Cars turned out to be cheaper than in Russia in Germany – $40 thousand. They are even cheaper in Australia ($35 thousand), South Korea ($30 thousand) and China ($22.5 thousand).
The Chinese cars that have flooded the Russian market are much cheaper at home. For example, the Geely Monjaro crossover of 2026 is sold for 191,100 yuan or 2.1 million rubles. In Russia, its price starts from 3.99 million rubles on a special offer, and the full price is 4.5 million rubles.
The huge dollar prices cannot be explained by a strong ruble, but by the state’s tariff policy, points out Tselikov: the price of a car, both when imported and when assembled in large units, increases twice compared to its cost in the “native” market (The Moscow Times).
