The Volzhanin poultry factory, which supplies 20% of the chicken egg market in central Russia, has announced a temporary suspension of deliveries.
According to a source from Kommersant, the reason was an outbreak of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) at the company’s site in the Yermakovo settlement of the Yaroslavl region. Shipments were suspended on December 21. The source noted that the factory’s operations are effectively paralyzed, and the question of “the feasibility of at least partially resuming work” is currently being addressed.
The state veterinary service of the Yaroslavl region confirmed the detection of an HPAI outbreak at Volzhanin. It ordered regional enterprises to strengthen sanitary measures, including not allowing outsiders, not contacting with wild birds, and strictly controlling the disinfection and thermal processing of feed. The service also demanded immediate reporting of mortality rates exceeding 0.5% in a single poultry house. Albert Davleev, President of AgriFood Strategies, stated that the implementation of quarantine and recovery measures at Volzhanin could take about half a year. According to him, this is due to the high density of poultry housing and the long breeding cycle of laying hens (The Moscow Times).
