Travellers from Slovakia will soon have a new route to Romania, as low-cost airline Wizz Air launches a direct service from Bratislava to Bucharest. The new link is set to begin on October 28 and will operate three times a week – on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays – during the winter schedule.
This marks the first direct connection between Bratislava and the Romanian capital in several years.
Wizz Air’s new route adds to the carrier’s existing connections from the Slovak capital, which currently include services to Skopje and London Luton.
Tickets are already available via the Wizz Air website and mobile app, with prices starting from EUR 17.99 one-way, including taxes and a small cabin bag.
The announcement comes as Bratislava Airport experiences a notable increase in passenger numbers. As of July 10, the airport had already handled over 1 million travellers in 2025 – reaching that milestone earlier than in previous years.
This year’s figures represent a strong recovery in demand. In both May and June, the airport recorded its highest-ever monthly passenger volumes for those respective months since operations began in 1951. June saw 281,477 passengers pass through the airport, a 14% YoY increase.
The surge in numbers has been driven in part by the launch of several new routes this year, including Gdansk, Milan Malpensa, Bari, Skiathos, Zadar, Tel Aviv and Copenhagen. The growth is also being supported by tour operators, with increased charter traffic to destinations such as Turkey and Egypt.
Freight volumes have also surged – June cargo throughput rose by 77%, reaching 1,482 tons. Aircraft movements rose by 4%, with 3,424 arrivals and departures in June alone.
Top destinations during the first six months of the year included London, Antalya, Hurghada, Manchester and Malta.
According to data from ACI Europe, Slovakia is currently the fastest-growing country in the EU in terms of air passenger numbers. In May, passenger traffic at Slovak airports was up by 33% compared with the previous year, with Bratislava Airport alone recording a 34% increase – placing it among the top five fastest-growing mid-sized airports in Europe.
