In the week before Easter, the average price for slaughter-ready pig carcasses increased by 5.5% compared to the previous week, to UAH 89.2/kg. This was reported by the Ukrainian Pig Farmers Association.
The brisk pork procurement on the eve of Easter against the backdrop of a weakened supply of industrial-quality pig carcasses contributed to a further increase in quotations. Most of the commodity lots this week were purchased at UAH 89-92/kg. There were occasional slightly lower prices.
Meat processors are ambiguous in assessing the dynamics of trade before the holiday weekend. Some of them state that sales volumes are lower than on the eve of Easter in previous years. Others, on the contrary, emphasize the revival of demand and believe that the decrease in trade volumes corresponds to the reduction in market capacity and domestic production.
Given this, as well as the beginning of the picnic and barbecue season, meat processors mostly expect either a short-term consolidation of prices within 90-93 UAH/kg, or a further increase in prices in response to a seasonal change in consumer activity with a limited supply of conditioned pork.
