Lithuania is set to buy two attack boats from Finland for its Navy for 22 million euros, the Defence Ministry has announced.
The Defence Materiel Agency signed the contract for the purchase of the multifunctional attack boats jointly with Latvia’s Defence Ministry, it said in a press release on April 7.
The value of the contract for Lithuania is 22 million euros. The two fast boats will be equipped with an Israeli Spike missile launcher as well as a remote-controlled heavy machine gun system.
According to the ministry, the boats will be used by the Lithuanian Navy and will help counter threats from the Gulf of Finland to the Curonian Lagoon.
Due to their special design and propulsion system, the boats can operate in very shallow waters.
Defence Minister Dovile Sakaliene expects the new boats to significantly strengthen the Navy and ensure a faster response to security challenges in regional waters.
“Moreover, this contract is a great example of how small countries can collaborate to create a stronger and more effective defence, ensuring stability and security throughout the Baltic region,” she said in the press release. (LRT)
