Investments, increased military assistance, European integration and a just peace for Ukraine were the main topics of Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal’s meetings during his working visit to Germany.
“The only way to peace is our unity, strength and security. Security is first and foremost NATO. Ukraine’s membership in NATO is the only effective tool that can stop the recurrence of aggression. Even if we are not in NATO tomorrow, we need bold political decisions and a concrete framework for this membership,” the Head of Government stressed at a press conference following the Government visit to Berlin.
He also stressed the importance of developing the Ukrainian and European defence industries.
The Prime Minister called on the German Government to join the programme of financing the Ukrainian defence industry. In particular, it is about German investments in Ukrainian drones and long-range missiles.
“We need EUR 820 million to effectively utilise our production capacities,” said Denys Shmyhal.
He also emphasised that strengthening Ukraine’s air defence was an important issue for our country.
At the same time, the Prime Minister stressed that Ukraine appreciated Germany’s military support, which had already exceeded EUR 12 billion since the beginning of the russian invasion.
Another important topic of the working visit was Ukraine’s accession to the European Union.
“We call for Ukraine’s accession to the EU and NATO to be viewed as a single entity and count on Germany’s readiness to continue to provide political and advisory assistance to Ukraine during the EU accession negotiations,” said Denys Shmyhal, adding that Ukraine was looking forward to the EU Council’s decision to open the first negotiation cluster in early 2025.
Speaking to the press, the Prime Minister noted that Ukraine and Germany had an ambitious agenda for the development of relations in all areas.
“We pay special attention to cooperation in the energy sector. This autumn, the German Government announced an additional EUR 235 million to support the restoration of our energy system. We are also working with German companies to supply equipment from German thermal power plants,” said Denys Shmyhal.
He also noted the high interest of German companies in investing in Ukraine.
“We offer the German private sector unique opportunities and a place in the reconstruction of our country,” the Prime Minister stressed and added that German politicians and businesses understood that Ukraine and Europe were inextricably linked. (Government portal)
