A EUR 1.3-million twinning project on road safety has come into effect in Georgia under the European Union (EU) assistance, the Economy Ministry reports.
The project supporting the Establishment of Comprehensive Road Safety Database and Further Improvement of Road Safety Management in Georgia aims to contribute to the establishment of European practices in the field.
The successful implementation of the project would have a “positive impact” on the process of overcoming the challenges in terms of road safety in Georgia, Deputy Economy Minister, Guram Guramishvili said.
During the first meeting of the project management committee held on March 31, it was also mentioned the twinning project sought to align Georgia with the EU standards and regulations and strengthen the regulatory environment in this area.
As part of the Association Agreement signed in 2014 between Georgia and the EU, the project will also focus on improving the traffic accident data collection and analysis-based approaches at the institutional level.
Development of an effective road safety management system, establishment of a National Trauma Registry and an effective data management system, and strengthening of the capacity of national agencies working in the field of road safety are also part of the project’s objectives.
The project is being implemented by organizations from Poland and Lithuania, while the beneficiaries of the project are the Georgian Economy Ministry, Interior Ministry and the National Centre for Disease Control and Public Health. (Agenda/Business World Magazine)
