Deputy Chairperson of Public Union “Sheep and Goat Breeding of Ukraine” Natalia Yakymenko says Ukrainian producers of feta cheese have come up with a new, substitute name for the product manufactured in Ukraine, that is “Nabil Rozsilny” (brined cheese).
“In Ukraine there is an ancient word “nabil” that is rarely used. Therefore, manufacturers propose feta to be sold as Nabil Rozsilny,” she said.
The expert says the need to define a new name for the product arose due to the implementation of the Ukraine-EU Association Agreement. Feta is protected in the European Union with the geographical indication of origin. Therefore, Ukrainian companies will have no right to call their product “feta” from 2023. The rebranding requires a powerful consumer awareness campaign, the expert added. (UNIAN/Business World Magazine)
