The Asian Development Bank (ADB) is financing repair work on the Tbilisi Metro system with $15 million, announces Tbilisi Mayor Kakha Kaladze.
The repair work includes the installation of new cables, 32 European standard ventilation systems and 28 airing tunnels.
“We have a very difficult situation in Tbilisi Metro in terms of electric wiring. Since the metro was opened, these types of works have not been done yet. About 450 km cables will be replaced with modern, ISO standard cables”, said Kaladze.
The work will start on July 1 and will have been completed by the end of the month. During this period Tbilisi Metro will work from 6 a.m. to 11 p.m.
Passengers of Tbilisi Metro have already been traveling in renovated wagons and new trains. As Kaladze said earlier this process would continue as well.
Furthermore, the development of an aboveground metro system is also planned.
At the first stage, the ground-based metro will connect the Samgori metro station with the Lilo Market and Tbilisi Airport. Construction work will begin at the end of 2019.
The modernization of the Samgori metro station will be carried out and it will be connected with the new metro line as well.
Between 2021-2022, seven new metro stations and a fully renovated Samgori metro station will be gradually put into operation. (Agenda/Business World Magazine)
