Transmission system operator Elering expects the submarine power cable to run between the Western Estonian island of Muhu and the mainland to be completed by 2020.
In a letter sent to Saaremaa Municipality, Elering emphasized that while the company understood locals’ concerns regarding the high voltage power lines running along the dam connecting Saaremaa and the island of Muhu, the company’s primary responsibility was to ensure power supply.
The power supply of the islands of Saaremaa and Hiiumaa is dependent upon an overhead transmission line running along the dam across Vaike Strait. In 2015, however, Elering decided to establish a submarine power cable between the islands of Muhu and Saaremaa.
“The plan this year is to announce a public procurement for a builder of the sea cable,” Elering board member Kalle Kilk said. “If the procurement is successful and other preparations go according to plan, the sea cable should be completed in 2020.” (ERR/Business World Magazine)
