Freight volume handled in the Port of Liepaja in January-May climbed by 24.7% YoY, to 2,890,500 million tons, the Port Authority says.
In the reporting period, transshipment of coal surged 6-fold, to 723,400 tons, wood pellets – 2.2-fold, to 150,700 tons, construction materials – by 7.8%, to 222,600 tons, oil products – by 65.6%, to 187,900 tons, grain dropped by 11.4%, to 1,045,800 tons, timber – by 9.6%, to 142,600 tons.
Container traffic grew 1.7-fold, to 1,657 TEUs, Ro-Ro – by 5%, to 13,308 units.
Port of Liepaja was founded in the 1990s at the former Soviet Union’s naval base. Liepaja ranks third port of Latvia by cargo volume. Half of the port’s cargo throughput is fueled by crude oil and bulk cargoes imported from the CIS countries, largely from Belarus. In 2016, throughput of Liepaja port was 5.68 million tons.
