The weather conditions are fair at the onset of winter crops’ dormancy. Most fields in the country are covered with 5-2 cm of snow.
The soil is not frozen deeply yet, mostly to 1-8 cm; this depth reaches 10-13 cm just in some areas of Belarus. Soil temperatures at the tillering node of winter cereals and the root neck of perennial grasses are mostly within -1 to +1 degrees C. Only individual weather stations reported them falling to -2-3 C.
Snow cover will build up gradually in the near future, keeping the soil from freezing, and the snow will protect winter crops against low temperatures. (UkrAgroConsult/Business World Magazine)
