The North-South railway corridor of Moldova, with a length of 400 km will be rehabilitated until 2024. 71 million euros will be invested in the works. A memorandum to this end was signed by Moldova Railway (CFM) and Ukrzaliznytsia from Ukraine.
It is about the North – South Railway Corridor of Moldova: Valcinet – Ocnita – Balti – Ungheni – Calarasi – Cainari. As a result of the implementation of the project, the speed and capacity of trains will be increased and the transportation of goods from Ukraine to the European Union will be facilitated.
The works will be carried out with the financial support of external partners. The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) and the European Commission have already approved a financial package, through which the EU will offer a grant of 20 million euros, and the EBRD will offer the government of the Republic of Moldova 23 million euros. Another 28 million euros will be invested from other sources, and in total, the financing package is 71 million euros.
The rehabilitation project of the railway section was developed by the Moldovan railwaymen within the Solidarity Lanes initiative, which was supported by the European Commission and provided for the development of alternative logistics routes, as well as the stimulation of Moldova’s economic development.
The project will also contribute to food security, facilitating the access of Ukrainian goods to the largest operable port on the Black Sea, Constanta, as well as to the ports of Romania, Moldova and Ukraine, in Galati, Reni, Ismail and Giurgiulesti. They have a cumulative operating capacity that can absorb a significant portion of Ukraine’s export needs. (Moldpres/Business World Magazine)
