Ukrzaliznytsia, together with the Ministry of Development, continues to systematically provide communities with comfortable rail connections. Another modernized suburban electric train – EP9T – has started operating in the Chernihiv region. This is the 12th train that Ukrzaliznytsia has restored on its own in 2025 and the 48th since the beginning of the full-scale war.
The 1988 electric train, after modernization at the Kyiv Electric Wagon Repair Plant, received a full renovation and modern equipment. Now it meets modern standards of comfort and accessibility:
– Inclusive space and comfortable conditions for passengers with reduced mobility;
– Comfortable cabins with a modern design;
– Sockets for charging gadgets;
– Changing tables;
– Places for transporting bicycles.
“Step by step, Ukrzaliznytsia is forming a modern standard of suburban transport – it continues to modernize its rolling stock and is working to ensure that such trains become the standard of comfortable daily travel in all regions of the country. This year, the state has also significantly strengthened support for passenger transportation. In parallel, we are working together on systemic mechanisms for stable financing of passenger transportation next year,” said Deputy Minister of Community and Territorial Development of Ukraine Oleksiy Balesta.
Systemic renewal of passenger rolling stock is a response to the challenges that have accumulated due to decades of underfinancing of railway assets. Outdated trains no longer meet the modern needs of passengers, so the modernization of suburban trains is not only a matter of comfort, but also a strategic condition for the preservation and development of the railway. Despite limited resources, the state and Ukrzaliznytsia continue to find opportunities for investments in new rolling stock and infrastructure renewal.
On average, 100,000 passengers use suburban trains every day. It is expected that in 2026, Ukrzaliznytsia will continue the program of modernization of electric trains. (Development Ministry)
