Lithuania has acquired advanced anti-tank land mines and artillery shells as part of efforts to strengthen its defence capabilities, the Defence Ministry reports.
The mines, valued at more than 10 million euros, are designed to counter armoured vehicles. Ammunition depots have also been restocked with 155 mm artillery shells worth 520,000 euros. The shorter-range shells are intended for use with the PzH 2000 self-propelled howitzers.
“The accumulation of ammunition is a strategically important step toward strengthening Lithuania’s defence capabilities,” Defence Minister Dovile Sakaliene said in the ministry’s statement. “We must ensure that the Lithuanian Armed Forces always have enough – or even a surplus – of modern ammunition, as this is not just a number on paper but a guarantee of the security of our people.”
She added that the military were stockpiling both 155 mm artillery shells and modern anti-tank mines “to ensure effective deterrence”.
The purchases were made through the NATO Support and Procurement Agency. (LRT)
