During a working visit to Sumy region, Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal visited an educational institution in the regional capital where an underground shelter was under construction. Also present were Deputy Prime Minister for Restoration and Minister for Communities and Territories Development Oleksii Kuleba and Head of the State Agency for Restoration and Infrastructure Development Serhii Sukhomlyn.
“The protective structure will accommodate 500 people, enabling children to study in person safely. Approximately UAH 117 million from state and local budgets has been allocated for this project. Construction is expected to be completed before the start of the next academic year,” said Denys Shmyhal, noting that the school currently operated in a mixed format, partly online.
The Prime Minister announced that a total of four “underground schools” were planned for Sumy, with eleven to be built across the region.
Denys Shmyhal discussed with Serhii Sukhomlyn, Head of the State Agency for Restoration and Infrastructure Development, possible mechanisms to simplify the implementation of such projects for smaller educational institutions.
“Ensuring the safety of the educational process is our key focus in the education sector. We are consistently working to enable as many children as possible to attend schools and study in safe and comfortable conditions,” the Head of Government emphasised. (Government portal)
