Lithuania and the United Kingdom are discussing opportunities to open direct flights between Vilnius and London Heathrow.
Transport Minister Marius Skuodis and UK Transport Secretary Grant Shapps signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) in London on the development of air services and discussed the possibility of direct flights between Vilnius and Heathrow airports, the Transport Ministry said in a press release.
“Direct flights to London’s Heathrow Airport, the largest in the world, would undoubtedly bring even greater mutual benefits to the countries,” Skuodis said in the statement.
UK experts are currently advising the Lithuanian ministry on a model for promoting flights to “destinations of strategic importance”. Heathrow has been identified as one of the priorities, according to the ministry.
The meeting also addressed support for the reconstruction of Ukraine’s transport infrastructure and the country’s cargo exports to European and global markets.
Under the memorandum, Lithuania and the UK undertake to grant each other’s air carriers the right to land on their territories to provide full air cargo services without any restrictions on routes, capacity or frequency. This will also apply to flights to third countries. The UK plans similar bilateral agreements with other EU countries.
The UK is also working intensively with Lithuania on the development of 5G communications technology, the Transport Ministry says. (LRT/Business World Magazine)
