The Polish state-owned natural gas giant PGNiG has appealed to the Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU) against the General Court of the EU’s rejection of Poland’s charges versus Gazprom.
In February, the General Court of the EU rejected charges against a 2018 settlement between the European Commission (EC) and Russian oil and gas monopoly Gazprom brought by PGNiG. The 2018 Gazprom-EC deal allowed Gazprom to evade heavy fines for monopolizing the Central and Eastern European (CEE) gas market.
PGNiG maintains its negative assessment of Gazprom’s obligations as part of the settlement, and in the company’s opinion, these obligations did not ensure that competition was restored on the gas market in CEE, PGNiG said in a press release on April 14.
PGNiG hopes that the CJEU will share the arguments presented in the appeal, and that Gazprom’s actions involving the abuse of its dominant position will meet with a decisive reaction from the European Commission to actually ensure equal conditions of competition on the European gas market.
