In July-December 2021-2022 MY, Ukraine exported record 15.9 million tons of wheat, up by 27% YoY.
Traditionally, North Africa (24%), Middle East (24%) and Southeastern Asia (23%) were the leading importers of Ukrainian wheat.
Particularly, the shipments to Southeastern Asia remained virtually unchanged at 3.7 million tons, supplies to North Africa increased by 20%, to 3.9 million tones, while the export of wheat to Middle East doubled to 3.8 million tons.
Turkey, Saudi Arabia and Israel accounted for the bulk of the export surplus. Turkey tripled import of Ukrainian wheat to 1.532 million tons. Supplies to Saudi Arabia increased almost 10-fold, to 621.9 thousand tons. Israel doubled purchases to 325.4 thousand tons.
The stronger demand for Ukrainian wheat is based on lower carry-over stocks in the Middle East countries. Additionally, smaller crop and weaker export potential along with the export restrictions in Russia that usually is the key supplier of wheat to the Middle East has shifted the demand to Ukrainian origin.
APK-Inform forecasts the export of Ukrainian wheat at record 22.5 million tons in 2021-2022 MY. (APK-Inform/Business World Magazine)
