As of the end of January, the registered unemployment level in Latvia was 8% of the economically active population, up by 0.3% MoM, according to information from the State Employment Agency (NVA).
There were 72,612 unemployed people in Latvia as of the end of January, up by 3,007 people.
The lowest registered unemployment level observed at the end of January was in Riga region – 6%, up by 0.2%.
The highest unemployment level remains in Latgale – 16%, showing the most rapid monthly climb in unemployment among other regions on top of that (+0.6%).
Unemployment in Zemgale has increased by 0.5%, reaching 7.85%. Unemployment in Vidzeme has increased by 0.4%, to 8%, and in Kurzeme by 0.4%, to 8.6%.
Riga’s registered unemployment level has increased by 0.2%, to 5.9% of economically active population in January.
In 2020, the level of registered unemployment in Latvia was 7.7% of the economically active population. The highest unemployment levels of last year were observed in June and July – 8.6%.
At the end of 2019 the registered unemployment level in Latvia was 6.2%. (BNN/Business World Magazine)
