The main objectives of Latvia’s defense sector for 2021 will be modernization of the country’s army and enhancement of its cyber security, according to the legislative draft on the 2021 state budget.
Defense Ministry’s planned expenditures for 2020 reach EUR 548,332,786, whereas next year’s expenditures are EUR 693,521,903. It is planned to spend EUR 201,863,149 on international operations and wages of personnel of Latvia’s National Armed forces. EUR 367,098,852 is planned to be spent on maintenance of National Armed Forces.
Defense Ministry’s main activities for 2021 include sustainable development of the country’s armed forces in accordance with the standing development plan and available funding. The ministry also plans to secure necessary infrastructure solutions to ensure comprehensive development for the armed forces by continuing development of combat and support capabilities and construction of related infrastructure.
Next year it is planned to continue development of anti-air, fire support, command capabilities and mechanized land infantry capabilities, perform necessary personnel training and infrastructure construction to adopt the usage of Black Hawk helicopters.
Defense Ministry also plans to continue developing the country’s comprehensive defense system and strengthen society’s resilience. It is planned to outline each ministry’s role in state defense and continue organization of the government’s crisis management “Kristaps” exercises.
It is also necessary to continue providing host country support for the NATO battle group stationed in Latvia, as well as develop the headquarters of multinational division “North”, the ministry adds.
It is also important to promote National Guard recruitment and motivation in 2021, as well as continue supplying the National Guard with the necessary equipment and appropriate infrastructure, the ministry stresses.
In 2021, it is intended to continue National Armed Forces provision reform through improvement of the warehouse system and material and technical support.
Latvia’s Defense Ministry also plans to enhance the country’s cyber security and national cyber protection capabilities to improve protection against cyber attacks and reduce risks to digital security.
It is also planned to continue introducing comprehensive state defense teaching at education facilities, as well as create NBS Cadets School. (BNN/Business World Magazine)
