Municipal company AS Daugavpils satiksme has a project application in the works for EUR 10-million co-financing from the EU Cohesion Fund in order to build a new tramway line and reconstruction one of the existing lines, as reported by the city’s municipality.
The company has received an invitation from the Central Finance and Contracts Agency (CFLA) to submit a project application for support from the Cohesion Fund to construct an environment friendly public transport infrastructure. Daugavpils may also receive EUR 10 million for further development of its tramway route network.
Cohesion Fund’s financing is intended for reconstruction of the tramway line infrastructure with plans for restoration and extension, as well as procurement of rolling stock. Daugavpils satiksme plans to prepare a project to reconstruct the tramway lines and contact network along Cietoksna Street from Parades iela to the final destination Cietoksnis, as well as construction of a new tramway line along Vainode Street by combining the final destination of the third route with Kimiku micro-district.
The project’s idea was presented to members of the city council, who will make the final decision in regards to whether or not the project should be submitted in its current format or are here corrections in store. The final version of the project should be submitted to the agency until November 30.
As previously reported, Daugavpils and Liepaja tramway route network development will receive EUR 20 million from EU funds. CFLA notes that the second project selection phase has been announced for tramway infrastructure development in Daugavpils and Liepaja.
To promote the increase of the number of passengers in environmentally friendly public transport, funding from the Cohesion Fund – EUR 10 million for each project in Daugavpils and Liepaja – is intended to future development of tramway routes, including reconstruction of infrastructure, as well as procurement of rolling stock.
At the same time, CFLA notes that tramway infrastructure development using EU finances has already commenced as part of the first project selection phase.
Daugavpils satiksme implements the project Environment Friendly Public Transport Development in Daugavpils City using EUR 13 million from the Cohesion Fund. LLC Liepajas tramvajs has received co-financing of EUR 12.2 million from Cohesion Fund for reconstruction of tramway lines and reconstruction of the territory surrounding the complex.
It is planned to finish tramway infrastructure projects in 2023. (BNN/Business World Magazine)
