Azerbaijani state oil company SOCAR can provide Iran with its gas storage tanks, President of SOCAR Rovnag Abdullayev said.
He said that the matter rested in small amounts of 1-2 billion cubic meters of gas.
“Iran has problems with the gas supply to its northern regions in the winter months”, Abdullayev said. “The Iranian side is very interested in using our gas storage facilities to pump gas in them in summer and supply it to its northern parts in winter”.
Head of the Azerbaijani state oil company noted that this issue was discussed within the framework of the visit of Iranian President Hassan Rouhani to Azerbaijan in August.
At the same time, he noted that Azerbaijan needed technical gas to check volumes of its gas storage facilities.
He said that the negotiations were being held with Iran.
“We have already increased the capacity of our gas storage facilities to 3.5 billion cubic meters, but we have the possibility to increase it to more than 5 billion cubic meters, simply at first we want to check the volumes of our gas storage facilities and that’s what we need the technical gas for”, Abdullayev added.
He said that earlier such negotiations were held with the Russian Gazprom company, however SOCAR was not satisfied with the gas company’s conditions.
Earlier the gas storage operation department of the Azneft Production Union reported that it was planned to increase capacity of gas storage facilities in Azerbaijan to 5 billion cubic meters.
Work on reconstruction and expansion of gas storage facilities in Azerbaijan will be held with this purpose, as well as new gas wells will be designed and the existing infrastructure will be upgraded. (Trend/Business World Magazine)
