The World Bank is ready to provide some $1 billion for Ukrainian roads repair, the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) could provide some $700 million, while no more than 10% of the targeted international assistance is used for these purposes in the country, Ukrainian Infrastructure Minister Volodymyr Omelyan has said.
“Unfortunately, today we permanently ask for assistance, but when it is provided, we use a small percentage of it. When it comes to Ukrainian roads, this is less than 10%”, he said.
The minister said that it had been decided to fully change the approach to operations of Ukravtodor.
“We want to completely change the approach of public structures to their operations. Serious staff reshuffling was conducted at Ukravtodor: the board of Ukrainian Automobile Roads state enterprise was fully changed – the structure that was involved in construction and maintenance of roads. Top managers of Ukrdorinvest, a state-run company that coordinated cooperation with international financial institutions, were also reshuffled”, he said.
Omelyan said that the task for the new top managers of Ukrdorinvest was to make sure that the money provided by international institutions was really used in the country’s economy. They have one month to show their efficiency. (Interfax/Business World Magazine)
