Lithuania will construct a new garage for JLTV all-terrain vehicles along with a headquarters and administrative building at the King Mindaugas Hussar Battalion in the Panevezys district, the Defence Ministry has announced.
More than EUR 200 million will be invested over the next three years to modernise the infrastructure of the Iron Wolf Infantry Brigade, which includes the hussar battalion.
The Iron Wolf Infantry Brigade expansion is part of a broader plan to modernise military facilities across Lithuania. According to the Defence Ministry, EUR 4 billion will be invested in military infrastructure nationwide over the next four years.
Over ten large-scale projects are underway, ranging from new construction to the upgrading of existing facilities, most due for completion until the end of 2027.
Work has already begun at the hussar battalion, where a JLTV garage is under construction. The scheme includes auxiliary facilities, a concrete vehicle yard, pedestrian walkways, lighting and a rainwater drainage system. Completion is scheduled for mid-2026.
The battalion will also receive a new headquarters and administrative building. The ministry said the design stage is ongoing, with construction expected to finish until late 2027. One existing garage will be converted into an administrative block with storage space, to be completed in early 2027.
Another major project will upgrade the battalion’s barracks to house around 600 troops, with completion set for the end of 2027.
Elsewhere, at the Grand Duke Algirdas Infantry Battalion in Rukla, Jonava district, a new storage building is being built, scheduled for completion in early 2028. Procurement is also under way for a howitzer garage, expected to be ready in the first quarter of 2027.
In Alytus, the Grand Duchess Birute Uhlan Battalion will be equipped with modern training systems until the third quarter of 2027. The ministry said the new technology would ensure higher-quality and more effective training for troops. (LRT)
