Following the reconstruction of the railway section Gaiziunai-Kaisiadorys, the Vilnius-Riga train will be able to run faster on this section and will make additional stops in Lithuania’s Jonava and Kedainiai, Lietuvos Gelezinkeliai (Lithuanian Railways, LTG) has said in a press release.
According to LTG, the journey time will not change after adding more stops.
The Vilnius-Riga train, which started running at the end of last year, would start making additional stops in Jonava and Kedainiai from April 1.
Kristina Meide, head of LTG Link, the passenger arm of LTG, says that the inclusion of additional stops on the Vilnius-Riga route is a pilot project. The aim is to monitor the number of passengers choosing domestic and international routes, which will allow for an objective assessment of the effectiveness and need for additional stops. It is scheduled to run until the end of the year.
Currently, the daily Vilnius-Riga train stops at Lithuania’s Kaisiadorys, Siauliai and Joniskis and Latvia’s Jelgava. The trip takes just over four hours. (LRT)
