The wine sector in the Republic of Moldova has increased potential to become sustainable and demonstrate care for nature, man and society, states an evaluation report on the degree of alignment of Moldovan wineries with the Fair-and-Green sustainability standard presented to the National Vine and Wine Office (ONVV) and USAID Rural Competitiveness and Resilience Activity in Moldova.
According to experts, the alignment of wineries to the sustainability standard ensures the improvement of the management of wineries and production technologies, environmental protection and the transition to a circular economy model, but also facilitates the access and marketing of bottled wine in international commercial networks.
In order to support the efforts of Moldovan wineries to align with sustainability standards, ONVV and wine producers’ associations, with the support of USAID, will continue in 2023 to promote the principles of sustainability by launching a complex program Sustainable Wine Program, with the final goal to certify bottled wines intended for export to the European Union market as “sustainable wines”.
The assessment of the degree of alignment of Moldovan wineries to the Fair-and-Green sustainability standards was carried out by an international company during 2022, within the pilot project Sustainable Moldovan Wine, carried out by ONVV with the support of USAID Moldova. The pilot project included six wineries (small, medium and large), evaluated according to the 150 criteria of the Wine Sustainability Code, which referred to practices regarding environmental protection, protection of biodiversity and natural resources, social responsibility, personnel policies and social commitments, preservation and promotion of heritage and cultural landscapes.
