With a share of 17% in total production, Poland is the third-largest producer of eggs in the European Union, a deputy head of the National Support Centre for Agriculture (KOWR) has said.
Marcin Wronski said that the supply of domestic eggs far exceeded domestic demand, making Poland one of the largest exporters of eggs in the EU.
“Because EU countries are the main export market for eggs produced in Poland, the demand on the common market is the main determinant of export volumes,” Wronski said.
Poland produced 10 billion eggs in 2020, placing the country just behind Spain and Germany, Wronski said.
In 2021, Poland exported 141,000 tons of eggs worth EUR 160 million, which compared to 192,000 tons with a value of EUR 204 million a year before, initial data from the Finance Ministry showed.
The decrease was due to restrictions on international trade and on the operation of hotels and restaurants due to the coronavirus pandemic as well as bird flu cases detected in Poland, Wronski commented.
Despite being a major egg producer in the EU, Poland has seen decreasing domestic consumption. In 2019-2020, the average Pole consumed 156-157 eggs a year, down from more than 200 before 2011. It is one of the lowest figures in the world, according to Wronski.
China is the biggest producer of eggs globally and is responsible for 35% of total supply. The country is followed by the United States (8%), India (7%) and the European Union (6%). (The First News/Business World Magazine)
