The state railtrack company Eesti Raudtee estimates the freight capacity for the ongoing year to stand at 12.5 million tons, up by 1 ton from 2020.
In January, the freight volume on Estonian railroads reached 1.2 million tons, up by 32% YoY.
According to Eesti Ruadtee commercial director Arthur Raichmann, a similar trend should continue in February. He also mentioned that while the growth was noticeable, it was hard to compare it to last year’s reduced capacities.
Freight volume has primarily grown in relation to transit haulage from Belarus and Ukraine, Raichmann said.
The largest freight volume in recent years was in 2015, when 15.1 million tons of freight moved on Eesti Raudtee infrastructure. (ERR/Business World Magazine)
