To improve the quality of gravel roads in Latvia, the company in charge of road maintenance VAS Latvijas Autocelu uzturetajs (LAU) performed grading of more than 111,000 km of gravel roads this year. Surface and pothole repairs have been performed in a total volume of 427,000 cubic meters, LAU reports.
Grading efforts are the most successful when the road surface is sufficiently moist.
The quality of gravel roads depends on lasting precipitation, which causes roads to lose their integrity and impacts the quality of driving conditions. Repairs and maintenance of overly moist gravel road surface do not last for long, explains the road maintenance company.
LAU surveys state roads regularly to uncover possible damages.
Until repairs have been completed, drivers are urged to be understanding and comply with road traffic signs installed along the roads under maintenance. (BNN/Business World Magazine)
