The Seimas of Lithuania has rejected a proposed new tax on polluting cars with a majority of several votes and returned the bill to the Ministry of Environment for improvement.
Thirty lawmakers voted in favor of accepting the bill for consideration, 36 were against and 34 abstained. The parliament then voted to return the bill to its initiators for further consideration.
The bill would see the introduction of a one-off car pollution tax when registering a car and it would range from several dozen to 1,280 euros.
The environment minister said the new tax would encourage people to buy less polluting cars and bring in almost 30 million euros in additional revenue. (LRT/Business World Magazine)
