Freight volume handled in the Port of Liepaja in January-June climbed by 30% YoY, to 3,272,900 tons, the port authority says.
In the reporting period, transshipment of coal surged 4.6-fold, to 780,400 tons, wood pellets – 1.4-fold, to 153,700 tons, construction materials – by 6.9%, to 270,200 tons, oil products – by 55.7%, to 219,400 tons, while grain dropped by 13.7%, to 1,124,700 tons, but timber rose by 15.7%, to 203,900 tons.
Container traffic grew 2-fold, to 2,139 TEUs, Ro-Ro – by 13%, to 17,166 units.
Port of Liepaja was founded in the 1990s at the former Soviet Union’s naval base. Liepaja ranks third port of Latvia by handled cargo volume. Half of the port’s cargo throughput is fueled by crude oil and bulk cargoes imported from the CIS countries, largely from Belorussia. In 2016, throughput of Liepaja port was 5.68 million tons.
