Rye production is steadily declining in Ukraine. If earlier Ukraine was an exporter of rye, before 2014 Ukrainian rye harvest was just enough for domestic consumption only. Over the last two seasons a new trend has emerged – both rye and rye flour imports are growing.
The need to import one of Ukrainian traditional grain crops looks unjustified. Nevertheless, this fact happens to be amid increasing grain production in Ukraine.
Experts are sure that profit margin of rye production is the main reason. In 2015 rye production profitability was among the lowest, and in 2014 it was even negative. Clearly, this fact does not contribute to high attractiveness of this grain crop, and therefore, results in production decrease. (UkrAgroConsult/Business World Magazine)
